Anthropologie-News: Migration & die Wiege der Menschheit

  • Native Americans descended from a single ancestral group, DNA study confirms: „Virtually without exception the new evidence supports the single ancestral population theory.„Our work provides strong evidence that, in general, Native Americans are more closely related to each other than to any other existing Asian populations, except those that live at the very edge of the Bering Strait,“ said Kari Britt Schroeder, a lecturer at the University of California, Davis, and the first author on the paper describing the study.“
  • Penn geneticist publishes largest-ever study on African genetics revealing origins, migration: „They also determined that the ancestral origin of humans was probably located in southern Africa, near the South Africa-Namibian border. Extrapolating the data, scientists were able to map ancient migrations of populations and determined that the exit point of modern humans out of Africa was near the middle of the Red Sea in East Africa. They also provide evidence for ancient common ancestry of geographically diverse hunter-gatherer populations in Africa, including Pygmies from central Africa and click-speaking populations from southern and eastern Africa, suggesting the possibility that the original pygmy language may have contained clicks. Overall, they demonstrate remarkable correspondence between cultural, linguistic, and genetic diversity in Africa. […] Anthropologists, historians and linguists now have at their disposal a completely new volume of research with which to test theories of human migration, cultural evolution and population history in Africa.“ – Dazu ein Bericht der NY Times: Eden? Maybe. But Where’s the Apple Tree?

Hobbit-News:

  • New analysis shows ‚hobbits‘ couldn’t hustle: Eine Untersuchung der Fußknochenüberreste des Homo floresiensis ergab, dass die Fußanatomie zwar modern ist, aber deutlich archaische Züge trägt. Ein weiterer Befund der für eine neue Spezies spricht: „H. floresiensis is either an island-dwarfed descendant of H. erectus that not only underwent body-size reduction but also extensive evolutionary reversals, or, as our analysis suggests, it represents a new species full of primitive retentions from an ancestor that dispersed out of Africa much earlier than anyone would have predicted. Either way, the implications for human evolution are profound.“ – Dazu der Guardian: Bericht & das Nature-Paper.

Neanderthaler-News:

  • Die Frage, wie die Neanderthaler ausstarben, beschäftigt Forscher & Experten seit langem. Anthropologe Fernando Rozzi vom Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris sorgt jetzt mit seiner anthropophagen Hypothese für Furore: Guardian:  How Neanderthals met a grisly fate: devoured by humans & SZ: Endete der Neandertaler in unseren Mägen? – Die Beweislage für Generalisierungen ist mit einem Sample allerings recht spärlich und muss noch durch andere Nachweise bestätigt werden.
